First Thoughts

Okay -- be honest. What was your first thought when you woke up this morning and remembered about our challenge? My first thought was, "Ugh! It looks so cold outside."

While I'm at my brother's home, I've decided that if exercise is going to happen it has to happen in the morning before the day gets crazy. When I left for my walk it was 42 but felt like 35 with the wind. On the bright side, I walked a lot faster than I usually do.

I've been drinking more water the past few days and have learned that I better be near a bathroom about 30 minutes later or I'll be sorry. Then I made the mistake of drinking 16oz before I left on my walk. If the wind didn't make me walk faster, the water definitely did. Any tips from you regular water drinkers? Does your body eventually get better at using the extra water rather than just flowing right through you? :)

I think sweets will be the hardest part of the challenge for me. I tend to be an all-or-nothing person. When I eat sweets, I can't seem to stop at just one. So knowing that I can enjoy 3 makes me a little nervous. Will I be able to stop? Should I just ban them all together? Will that only make it worse? Which category will be your greatest challenge?

Here's hoping for a great first day...with many more to come! Even as the cold wind was blowing this morning, the thought that I wasn't alone made it bearable.

  1. My first thought was, I wish I had taken more Nyquil. I woke up sick yesterday morning and not feeling any better today. But, with a 2 year old running around, I will definitely be getting in my exercise today... maybe not all at once, but eventually. All I drink is water anymore and have for some time. I haven't noticed that my body uses any extra water. I'm right there with ya on the 30 mins later! As to the sweets, I used to have the same problem, ban them altogether or just eat what I want. Oddly enough, it is very easy for me now to eat just one or two sweets. My problem will be chips, popcorn, etc. I love the salty treats more than the sugary treats. I know, I'm weird. LOL Thank you for this challenge though. I needed a new motivator to get me walking again!!!

  2. All the work that was put into setting up this challenge has got me excited and pumped up. (Thanks Heather!) I actually woke up and felt like going for a run (which is definitely NOT a normal feeling for me). I managed to squeeze in some time at the gym and ran on the treadmill. (If you like to run and happen to go to Wilson's, the "Woodway" treadmills are THE best - so much easier on the joints.) While I ran, I listened to a peppy Pandora station and watched a little of what was on the tv's overhead. The Food Network was airing a show called "Bizarre Foods Across America" and the host was visiting Iowa. Let me just say that they eat a lot of pork there. While I am not opposed to meat, I would not be able to eat it they way they were serving it. I will spare you the details, but let me just say that the way it was all presented was enough to send me home wanting nothing but vegetables for lunch!! (So check and check!) Thanks again for this awesome challenge! While I am super excited about it today, I am not so sure how I feel about it on future days - I will definitely be relying on the rest of you for help with that. Namely in the sweets department...

  3. My plan was to use daylight saving time to my advantage and wake up an hour early to work out. When I woke up this morning I thought to myself "nooooooooooooooooooo... five more minutes..." I am not a morning person!! But after a long day at work (I was super late... mornings - ugh), a long night of wrangling two kids into their beds, and a lot of stress with other things, I DIDN'T cave and drown my woes in Halloween candy! Instead I put on a show and walked for 25 minutes on my treadmill. I'm calling today a win.

  4. I woke up this morning and noticed it was raining and started trying to decide how much cleaning I really wanted to get done in order to get my 45 min. of exercise. I did manage to haul the laundry down stairs and got it sorted and started but it took less then 10 min. Hmmm. Walking would be so much more pleasant then stinky filthy boy laundry. As the morning wore on I felt less motivated for house work and more inclined to read a book. But "Hooray" the sun came out at lunch and the boys begged for a walk. So with three boys on bikes one on a scooter and the two little boys in the double jogging stroller we were off. They even asked to take the long way around the Daniel Boone Baseball fields About 40 minutes later we made it back home. Exercise done (check). Thank Goodness for the sun, its a great motivator.
The one thing I had difficulty was with keeping track of was water. I specifically picked a cup that if I filled it 4 times would be my 64 oz. The boys keep walking off with it. I purposely bought them their own bottles this summer so they wouldn't take mine. I might have to attach a bottle to myself in order to keep track of it tomorrow.
Jason is working on this challenge with me so we will be making a lot more trips to the store for fruits and vegetables as we both try to earn our daily credits.

  5. I woke up super sick yesterday (Day one) so I knew I would be skipping the exercise points for that day. There have been times in my life that a setback like that would be enough to discourage me from continuing to even try for the rest of the challenge, HOWEVER (and I've been thinking about this for a LONG time) my goal is to be healthy and this challenge is a way to help me get there. So, I'm getting off to a rocky, imperfect start, and I am OK with that. I am going to do my best even if I can't get perfect points/credits. It's taking me so long to realize that doing my very best is what matters the most and it's ok to not be "perfect." Just wanted to share that. ~Traci

    1. Needed to hear this - THANKS! I have a wonderfully awful tendency toward all or nothing...

I think we are kindred spirits.

  7. I have a question about the points. Is there partial credit? I'm being serious. If I can chug down half the water, do I get half points? Also, it's 5 points for 3 veggies/2 fruits. If I can eat 4 out of 5, do I get 4 points for the day? Just want to clarify and certainly don't want to cheat :-)
